The Rhos Dispersal sale

Rhos Ayrshires top at 8200gns

The dispersal of the entire Rhos herd of pedigree Ayrshires took place on farm in Cardigan, South Wales on Thursday 20th October 2022 with some 310 head attracting buyers from all over the United Kingdom. Philip and Lorenza Reed are well known and thought of in the “Ayrshire world” and throughout the local farming community which enticed a huge crowd both on farm and online to witness the quality of their stock and purchase some of the UK’s finest families and many tremendous commercial pedigree Ayrshire females.

The top trade of the day was 8200gns for lot 97 Rhos Yankee Lady Lottie EX91 who calved her third in May of this year. This Guimond Yankee bred young cow is the successive 7th Generation of Very Good or Excellent cows with her 3rd Dam being the well-known Barr Ranger Lottie EX95 3E. The successful purchase was made by Adam and Caroline Montgomerie to join their Lessnessock herd in Cumnock, Ayrshire in a joint ownership with J & A Struthers, Boylston Farm, Cumnock. Adam and Caroline were one of the largest volume buyers of the day purchasing a great group of all ages throughout the day which also included the GDam of Yankee Lady Lottie, Galaxy Durham Lottie Red ET EX94 3E for 2000gns.

Travelling to County Tyrone in Northern Ireland was lot 204 Rhos Beaumont Ovoid, a powerful stylish heifer due with her first in November. She was sired by Longwood Beaumont (Remington x Ranger) and from the Ovoid family originating at Heydale. Alan Irwin made this purchase for his Denamona herd for 4000gns.

It was the Dam of the day’s top price who held the next highest price of 3150gns. Looking superb was lot 12 Rhos Napier Lady EX92 and is by Ardmore Crown Napier and sold expecting her 7th calf in November and bred to Brieryside Hail. She joins the Sandyford herd in Loughborough for ET Tomlinson & Son.

Lot 92, the EX92 Rhos Alljoy Lesley sold for 3000gns. Currently in her 3rd lactation having calved in July, this young cow with great conformation is sired by Allstar Joyboy (Marlow x Reality) and from a home bred family.

WRC & JE Christophers purchased a wonderful group of young cows and heifers throughout the day for their Rosehill herd near Truro in Cornwall. The recently calved 2yr old Rhos Buster Audrey 2, lot 188 travels south for 2800gns. She was one of a superb group of daughters on offer sired by Cuthill Towers Buster.

It was fascinating to witness such a large crowd gather on farm for an on-farm sale. Trade was buoyant both at the farm and via the online platform Marteye, where there were large numbers of purchases made from home. Milking animals averaged £1760 (including all faults) and the overall days average was £1563 per life.
