Reduction Sale of the Changue Herd

One of the biggest crowds seen at Borderway for some time assembled to see Robert Stevenson disperse a selection of his renowned Changue herd. The Changue herd is now the longest established pedigree Ayrshire herd in the UK going back to the start of the 20th Century. Animals from all the top families went under the hammer and included the Celandines, Milkmaids and Pollys.

In spite of the low milk price and a lack of grass in many areas, prices remained strong at the Production Sale from the Changue herd.  Many buyers had previously purchased Changue cattle and were well aware of their breeding and production potential.  Top price of the day at 2,200gns went to Changue Celandine 141 GP83 by the Cattle Services sire Stamford Trigger, and from the same family as the UK top sire Changue Tryst she was potentially the fifth generation of VG cows.  Recently calved with her second, she joins the Holehouse herd of Messrs Logan, Holehouse, Kilbirnie, Ayrshire.

Following her at 2,100gns was Changue Melanie 168 GP84 calved in April and by the homebred Changue Fiord, she was on her way to make a big first record.  She went back to the famous Melanie family, her fifth dam being Melanie 3EX who produced over 80 tons lifetime.  This fancy young heifer now joins the herd of J & A Struthers, Boyltston Farm, Cumnock, Ayrshire.

Also selling at 2,100gns was Changue Wren 29, a member of the world renowned Wren family originally from the Bankend herd and sire by Auchensale BL Jurist.  She was a potential seventh generation EX or VG.  She was due to calve to Changue Melville and sold to Robin Young, Waterside, Kinbuck, Dunblane, Stirling.

Three animals sold at 2,000gns.  The first was the EX91 daughter of Changue Orcadian, Pride 58, selling to keen young breeders Messrs McIntyre, Gillmill Cottage Farm, Stewarton, Ayrshire.  Next at that price was a fresh calver, Carrie 57, a daughter of West Mossgiel Lord of the Ring, selling to biggest buyer of the day, J & M Prentice, Blackwood Farm, New Cumnock.  The third animal to sell at 2,000gns was Melanie 113 by Changuefam Red Book.  Fresh with her fifth and recently scored EX91 with an EX94 mammary, she joins the High Mark herd of the Watson family at Leswalt, Stranraer.

The Stevenson family would like to thank everyone who helped with the sale preparation and for all who attended and purchased cattle at the sale. They would like to wish everyone success with the cattle and hope they develop strong families as they have done at Changue.
