Red and Whites in strong demand at Meikle Laught

The dispersal of the Meikle Laught herd owned by David Carson took place on Friday 16th October 2009 at Borderway, Carlisle. In total just over four hundred animals were sold to buyers from all over the British Isles. The herd had doubled in size in the past three years with purchases of mainly commercial Holstein cattle; they sold to a top of 2,000 gns. This was for freshly calved heifer giving over 30 kgs with a fantastic udder; she was purchased by Healey Farms, Healey Home Farm, Riding Mill, Northumberland.

The main attraction of the sale was the pedigree Ayrshire’s cattle going back to the breeding of Willie Parker who originally owned the herd. The older cattle showed their tremendous longevity with cows in their ninth lactation selling to over £1,000. The younger heifers looked tremendous most with supper udders and great feet and legs. Top price in the Ayrshire section was for a milking heifer calved in June and sire by Bankend Celebration. She was from the Tico family from a VG87 dam by Horizon Ranger milking in her twelfth lactation. She sold for 2,100 gns and now joins the herd of Holehouse Farm, Holehouse, Kilbirine, Ayrshire.

Going to south Wales for 2,100 gns was another fancy udder heifer sired by Ellerton Special Blend. Calved in July giving 32 kgs she went back to a VG89 grand dam from the Larberry herd, she now joins the herd of GR Thomas, Tyreglwys Farm, Llangennech, Llanelli.

Another daughter of Ellerton Special Blend sold for 2,000 gns to Healey Farms, Healey Home Farm, Riding Mill, Northumberland. She had calved back in July and descended from the Present family, bred from and Excellent Horizon Ranger with yields over 10,000 kgs.

The young stock was particularly good. They were well grown for their age and showed tremendous potential. They were sired by the very best Red sires in the business including Rosedale-L Rampage Red, Baileys Red Rock Red, Kellcrest Ice Man, Kamos Hollow Arudolf Red, Fradon Jet Red and Sterndale Rose Royce Red.

David Carson would like to thank everyone who helped with the sale and wishes all the purchasers of his stock good luck and hopes the cattle thrive become profitable.
