First Northern National Ayrshire Show & Sale at Carlisle - Wednesday 14th October 2009
Clean sweep for Cuthill Towers at first National Sale with the top price of 2400gns going to Syke
The first Northern National Ayrshire sale took place on Wednesday 14th October 2009 and a very high quality entry ensured a packed ring side were there to witness the first National though the fact that two large dispersals of over 600 top class Ayrshires and Red & Whites are being held in the next two weeks definitely took the gloss of the trade especially for the Red & Whites.
The event had been kindly sponsored by Almins Nutrition and Cattle Services (Ayr) Ltd, with Archie Leitch of Almins and Edward Evans on hand to present the awards.
The Show and sale was dominated by an extremely high quality leet of heifers from the Lawrie family’s Cuthill Towers herd from Milnthort, Kinross which saw them pick up 1st & 2nd in the Senior in milk class, the first five places in the junior in milk class and the first three places in the in calf class.
Judge for the day was John Hunter from the noted Ardmore herd in Co. Antrim N. Ireland, who placed six classes with his Champion and Reserve coming from Cuthill Towers. Both came from the Junior Heifer in milk class and were twin sisters sired by Hilltower Stanley. Champion was Cuthill Towers Lintie 57 and Reserve was Cuthill Towers Lintie 58, both being from a VG 85 dam sired by Cuthill Towers Prince Rupert. They sold for 2,100 gns and 1,900 gns respectively to D G Morgan & A D Hughes, Little Auchengibbert, Logan, Cumnock who also purchased another top class heifer from the Lawrie’s for 2,100 gns, this time Cuthill Towers Zola 7. She was sired by Brieryside Centurian and was bred from a prolific line of Excellent and Very Good cows, and they looked a very shrewd investment at these prices.
A stylish young calf from the noted Syke herd of Willy & Jo Templeton and born in May this year, made the top price of the day selling for 2,400 gns. Syke Kellogg Sybil was sired by legendary Blackaddar BB Kellogg and out of the Excellent 94 Syke Indianhead Sybil that had won the Royal show in 2000. She was purchased by that Ayrshire enthusiast in Cornwall, Chris Creeper, Ashcroft, St Gennys, Bude.
The bull trade was quite selective with a strong demand for pure bulls and more could have been sold. Top seller at 2,200 gns was one of those from the Knowe herd of G & G Templeton, Knowe, Auchinleck, Cumnock. He was sired by Hidden Valley Garth and from the famous Willoxton Juda EX 90 that had won at Agri Scot in 2004. He was purchased by J. McGhie & Sons, Mid Threave, Kirkcowan, Newton Stewart. Next highest at 1650 gns was another pure bull, Auchensale Summer Sunset from the Carruth family at High Auchensale, Kilbarchan. Bred from an EX 90 dam who had produced over 100 tonnes and by the homebred B. L. Jurist, he sold at 1650 gns to M & M Maxwell, North Doddington, Northumberland. Champion bull was Brieryside Swan Lad from the Lawrie family at Brieryside & Sandyford, Monkton and he sold at 1000 gns to R R Hamilton, Cauldwakening Farm, Strathaven.
D & C Alderson, Scorton Road Farm, South Cowton, Northallerton consigned two quality animals with exceptional pedigrees who were both from Haresfoot Pamela 5 EX93 who was Supreme Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show in 2007. One daughter was freshly calved and sired by Hunnington Admiral and the other was a maiden heifer sired by Yellow Briar Journalist. Both sisters sold for 2,000 gns going to the Firm of W. Clark, Whins, Ecclefechan, Lockerbie and Mr. Geraint Thomas, Tyreglwys Farm, Llangennech, Llanelli, Dyfed respectively.
